ORLANDO, FL, January 11, 2013 — Join the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Orlando (JGSGO) for a program featuring Lisa Alzo’s pre-recorded webinar, “Beyond the Arrival Date: Extracting More from Passenger Lists”.

A key discovery in researching your Jewish ancestors is finding the passenger list where their voyage to the U.S. was recorded. There can by many subtle and hidden clues on those passenger lists that provide additional information. Learn how to really examine these lists to get more of the story! Join us as we view Lisa’s webinar and then hold a Q&A and sharing session.

An avid genealogist for 22 years, Lisa currently teaches online genealogy courses for Family Tree University and the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. She is the recipient of the 2002 Mary Zirin Prize given by the Association for Women in Slavic Studies to recognize the achievements of independent scholars, and is a frequently invited speaker for national conferences, genealogical and historical societies. “Jewish Genealogical Successes & Challenges”

Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Orlando Conducts Roundtable

ORLANDO, FL, December 10, 2012 — Join the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Orlando (JGSGO) for a Jewish genealogical successes and challenges roundtable.

We all have success and challenges as we research our family history. Several of our JGSGO members will explain at least one success on their genealogical journey. They will describe their thought process, interviewing and research techniques, resources used, advice given, anything and everything that added to their family tree. Their shared success story may help you break down your genealogical brick wall!

We will also address success stories and challenges from our guests as time permits. If you have a Jewish genealogical success story to share, send a one or two sentence brief description to jgsgo.maven@gmail.com . Alternatively, if you have a Jewish genealogical challenge to share, please email jgsgo.maven@gmail.com as soon as possible with the details about your challenge. We will ask a maven to address your challenge and report the results at the meeting. The sooner you contact our maven, the more time our maven will have to work on your challenge.

“Orlando Public Library Receives Jewish Research Collection”

Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Orlando Donates Dr. Jacob Schleichkorn Collection

ORLANDO, FL, November 8, 2012 — Join the JGSGO as it celebrates establishing a permanent home for the Dr. Jacob Schleichkorn Jewish Research Collection. The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Orlando (JGSGO) will host an event to introduce the collection to the public and offer free assistance to those researching their Jewish roots.

The JGSGO recently relocated their extensive Jewish Genealogical Research Library to the Orange County Library System - Main Branch in Orlando. After contacting the libraries at the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida, Rollins College and the Orange County Library System - Main Branch in Orlando, it was decided that the local Orange County library would be the preferable location. The OCLS/Orlando already has an extensive genealogy department on the fourth floor. When contacted, they were very receptive of the possibility of significantly expanding their holdings in the Jewish genealogy research area. What a “schidach”!

Many of the donated books are classics in terms of Jewish genealogy research.  All of the donated books contain a bookplate designating that the books were “donated by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Orlando in honor of and in memory of Dr. Jacob “Jay“ Schleichkorn”, a long time member of the JGSGO. The collection had been in storage for several months at the Hebrew Academy of Orlando, which also received two boxes of books appropriate for their library collection. Several volumes were similarly donated to the Holocaust Research and Education Center in Maitland.

The physical move was completed by JGSGO members Laurence Morrell and Tom Hirsch on October 16, 2012 and included nineteen boxes of nearly three hundred books, documents and publications. Some of the books donated include: Finding your Roots; From Generation to Generation; How to Trace Your Jewish Roots; Jewish Family Names and Origins; A Dictionary of Jewish Names and Their History; They Became Americans, They Came in Ships; Locating Your Immigrant Ancestors; The Jewish Experience in Western Pennsylvania; Morton-Allen Directory-Steamship Passengers; Jews Among the Indians; Cemetery Walk; Yiddish-Hebrew-English Dictionary; A Guide to the Holdings in the American Jewish Archives; Ships of Our Ancestors, Portal to America-the Lower East Side 1870-1925 plus many more.

Join us in this celebration, be introduced to the collection, and receive personal assistance with your research.
